Corridor workshop scheduled

imageThe City of Spokane Valley’s Sprague-Appleway planning series continues with another of several public workshops, the next scheduled for Thursday, November 30 beginning at 6:00 pm at Decades Meeting & Banquet Room, 10502 E. Sprague.

Unlike the first two meetings, the upcoming event will focus on participant ideas, thoughts and feedback in a “workshop” environment. Most of the evening’s activities will consider transportation-related design, including various ways to optimize the corridor for things like pedestrian and bicycle traffic, business visibility, car access, traffic speed and overall capacity. “It’ll be a busy evening, but we also expect it to be fun,” said Scott Kuhta, lead planner and project manager for the City. Organizers expect to have numerous large-scale photographs posted around the room, each representing various approaches to transportation design. Attendees will be able to rate and suggest which, if any of the concepts fit the Valley’s needs best, said Kuhta. Other activities scheduled include roundtable discussions, a question and answer session, and a segment for participant groups to present their ideas to everyone, he said.

The process will eventually lead to a long-range plan for the Sprague-Appleway corridor, including strategic and policy measures designed to improve the appearance, commercial viability and livability of the area. The plan will also help achieve a new “Town Center” for the Valley, supporting the City’s new Comprehensive Plan which calls for such a feature.

All Spokane Valley residents, business owners and those employed along the Sprague-Appleway corridor are encouraged to attend. The Decades Banquet facility is located in the U-City Mall, behind Percy’s Americana Cafe. Documents related to the event and to the entire process will be posted on the project website, at http://www.spragueappleway.com.

Second plan meeting announced

imageThe City of Spokane Valley will host the second of three community meetings on plans to revitalize the Sprague/Appleway corridor on Wednesday, October 11th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Decades Meeting Place & Banquet Room, 10502 E. Sprague, behind Percy’s Café Americana restaurant. All residents, business owners and those employed along the corridor are encouraged to attend.

Participants will help shape the Sprague/Appleway Revitalization Plan currently being developed by consultants for the City. The plan will examine past and present economic conditions along the Sprague/Appleway corridor, analyze opportunities and challenges, and make recommendations for land use, development, and transportation strategies that support economic revitalization along the corridor from I-90 to Sullivan.

Discussion at the meeting will follow that of the first “workshop” session held on September 13, and will include land-use proposals along the corridor, and display further work on the proposed town center concept, identified by community members in a 2004 survey as important to the future of Spokane Valley. Nearly 100 residents attended the September 13 meeting.

The third community workshop scheduled for this phase of the project is currently set for November 30. Background documents, event summaries and process information are available on the project website at http://www.spragueappleway.com. Corridor revitalization plan announced

imageThe City of Spokane Valley is holding the first of three community meetings to get input on revitalization of the Sprague/Appleway corridor and a proposed town center. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Decades Meeting Place & Banquet Room at 10502 E. Sprague, behind Percy’s Café Americana restaurant.

The meetings are part of the Sprague/Appleway Revitalization Plan currently being developed by a consulting team contracted by the City.
